Bells are an age-old element of the Polish audiosphere. “On the Angelus of the Lord the bells are ringing…” – wrote Kazimierz Przerwa-Tetmajer about the sounds, which are as natural element of the landscape as thatched roofs, country cemeteries, rivers and forests. Still, the carillon – a set of at least 23 tower bells played with a special keyboard – seems to be an exotic instrument of unrecognized potential. Fortunately, Monika Kaźmierczak, PhD, a graduate of the Academy of Music in Gdańsk and the Dutch Carillon School in Amersfoort, who holds the position of the Carillonist of the City of Gdańsk, is persistent in popularizing the carillon culture. Although the instrument she has chosen remembers the 16th century, its possibilities go far beyond the historical aspect. The works collected on this CD, composed by Zygmunt Krauze, Paweł Mykietyn, Aleksander Nowak, Agata Zubel and Elżbieta Sikora, are the proof.
